Wedding photography | How to choose a wedding photographer

If you have been following along with our blog posts you know we have been talking tons about wedding planning and hiring vendors. Today we are going to be looking specifically at photography! Choosing the right wedding day photographer can totally make or break your whole day. You will have the pictures your wedding photographer takes for the rest of your life, and if you choose not to hire a videographer (which we totally think you should!) then the wedding pictures are some of the only tangible memories from your day.

So…how do you hire your perfect wedding photographer? Our first tip is to hire a professional! (Read more about that here.)

Next, you want to make sure you hire someone whose style you love! But how do you do that? How can you tell which style best suits you and your vision if you’re not a photography expert? It’s actually really simple… you just have to DO YOUR RESEARCH! Seriously, grab a glass of wine and a notebook, light your fav candle and get ready to dig in.

Here is what we suggest…

First, create a Pinterest board just for wedding photography. Go through and pin all of your favorite wedding photos. Don’t pay attention to wedding colors, designs, or decor…just look at the pictures and pin what catches your attention and keeps it. Imagine what you want your wedding pictures to look like and search out those pictures first!

Once you have a full board it’s time to start studying what you have pinned. Look closely at the styles of the photos and the editing to really pinpoint what you like.

Not completely sure what you are looking for? Here are some basic examples.

These are just a few examples of things to notice when you are choosing what kind of wedding pictures you want.

Once you have really narrowed down what style you love and want, it’s time to find your perfect wedding photographer! We suggest finding at least five photographers who have a style you love before reaching out for availability and pricing. You can find photographer through your venue’s preferred vendor list, search engines, wedding planning websites (The Knot, Wedding Wire) or just through searching hashtags on social media.

It is important to remember that what you see on social media is just a small portion of a photographer’s work. Never be afraid of reaching out to them and asking for more examples or a larger portfolio. Also, remember that everyone (photographers included) choose to share the very best of themselves on social media. If you only kind of like what you see on their Facebook or Instagram there is a pretty good chance they are not the photographer for you!
